In today's post I would like to describe the slogan "America First", which is important in the context of American foreign policy also today. The phrase "America First" gained recognizability in the interwar period. President Wilson described this as his vision of neutrality. It gained wide popularity at the time when America First Comitee was active.   It was a, one of the biggest in american history, pressure group with a non-interventionism profile that wanted the US not to enter the Second World War. The slogan is now highly nationalist and emphasizes the one-sidedness of American foreign policy. It is often used by President Donald Trump, who sees it rather as a populist cliche because he declared that he is not an isolationist. In his inaugural speech, he said: "From this day forward, a new vision will govern our land. From this moment on, it’s going to be only America First.  In this post, I would like to describe midterm elections and their meaning. Midterm elections are elections to the congress held in the middle of the time that president holds the office, this time is called term, hence the name. Then the elections of all 435 members of the lower house and 1/3 senators are held. On this occasion, many lower officials are also elected, for example 36 states elect Governors. Midterms Elections are designed to show whether the public is satisfied with the current government of a rulling party and president. In recent US history, it has very rarely happened that a ruling party strengthened its power during midterms. In the last midterms of 2018, the Republican Party lost 40 seats in the House of Representatives and the majority in it again, but in the Senate it managed to increase ownership by two seats(53). In this post, I would like to describe the would-be 27th amendment to the US Constitution - ERA (Equal Rights Amendment). The amendment text: Women shall have equal rights in the United States and every place subject to its jurisdiction. Equality of rights under the law shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any State on account of sex. It was first presented to Congress in 1923, but the required 2/3 majority in both houses was not obtained until March 22, 1972. The amendment then needs to be ratified by at least 3/4 of the states (38) to enter into force, but despite the extended deadline, only 35 states have done so. The amendment was ratified within a year of being passed by 30 states, but protests against it from conservatives led by Phyllis Schlafly then escalated. The opponents of the ERA argued that the amendment could have very bad consequences, for example cause the recruitment of women to the army and the removal of alimony. The issue of the amendment retu...
In today's post I would like to describe one of the most important doctrines in American politics - the Monroe doctrine. The Monroe Doctrine was announced on December 2, 1823, in an address to the US Congress by President James Monroe. Its actual author was John Quincy Adams, then US Secretary of State.  Its main idea was the US opposition to the colonization of the Americas. Similar demands were made by US politicians earlier(including George Washington), but only then did they become the basis of American foreign policy (isolationism) and it is important to this day. Under this doctrine, the United States undertook not to interfere in the problems of European countries and their colonies.  This doctrine was intended to recognize the Western Hemisphere as the US sphere of influence and  had some successes. It was also confirmed by international law in article 21 of the Treaty of Versailles.  Sources: https://www.britannica.com/event/Monroe-Doctrine www.ourdocuments....
