In today's post I would like to describe the slogan "America First", which is important in the context of American foreign policy also today. The phrase "America First" gained recognizability in the interwar period. President Wilson described this as his vision of neutrality. It gained wide popularity at the time when America First Comitee was active. It was a, one of the biggest in american history, pressure group with a non-interventionism profile that wanted the US not to enter the Second World War. The slogan is now highly nationalist and emphasizes the one-sidedness of American foreign policy. It is often used by President Donald Trump, who sees it rather as a populist cliche because he declared that he is not an isolationist. In his inaugural speech, he said: "From this day forward, a new vision will govern our land. From this moment on, it’s going to be only America First.
