In today's post I would like to describe one of the most important doctrines in American politics - the Monroe doctrine.
The Monroe Doctrine was announced on December 2, 1823, in an address to the US Congress by President James Monroe. Its actual author was John Quincy Adams, then US Secretary of State.
Its main idea was the US opposition to the colonization of the Americas. Similar demands were made by US politicians earlier(including George Washington), but only then did they become the basis of American foreign policy (isolationism) and it is important to this day. Under this doctrine, the United States undertook not to interfere in the problems of European countries and their colonies.
This doctrine was intended to recognize the Western Hemisphere as the US sphere of influence and had some successes. It was also confirmed by international law in article 21 of the Treaty of Versailles.

To say that the doctrine "had some success" is an understatement. Latin American countries are treated by the US as their dependent territory - they finance coups and juntas, organise opposition and private armies, have huge business involvement.
