Recently I read an article by Domhnall O'Sullivan "Swiss 'burka ban' accepted by slim majority". The article was about the result of Sunday's referendum in Switzerland and about the public debate over the voted initiative to ban covering face.
In my opinion, the prohibition of covering the face is not that important, but maybe I do not fully understand the problem. Perhaps the proponents of the ban are right that it is a symbolic matter, and that the symbols shape the identity sphere , which they want to defend. I don't think it is Islamophobic, it is rather an attempt to emphasize identity and culture of their country, which I believe is right. In today's world where mass culture is beginning to dominate, any initiative that helps people and countries maintain their values is valuable. It is worth noting that it was only the 23rd citizens' initiative adopted (out of over 200) in the referendum and only 6 out of 26 cantons voted against it (mainly the large cities of Zurich, Bern, Basel, Geneva).

The burka ban has existed in some European countries, mainly France, which being a SECULAR country, treats it as a religious manifestation and forbids it. Just the same as using any religious symbols at schools.
