In this post, I would like to describe the colours of US parties. The Republican Party colour is red and the Democratic Party - blue. In 1972, when the results were first shown on CBS as colored election maps, states won by a Democratic nominee were marked in red and those won by President Nixon from the GOP in blue. This colours were taken from British political scene where red is assigned to left Labour party and blue to the conservatives. In 1984, the Republicans were in red in majority of TV stations, which was taken from their candidate's name (Reagan - Red). Since then, ABC and NBC have been using this colour scheme invariably, and in 1996 CBS also joined them because diffrent coulours could confuse the audience. Party colours were important in the 2000 elections when television had to show maps often due to changes and close results. Since then, colors have been permanently assigned to these parties.
